Full description:
Bathsheba is one of those roses that feels more like a character than a variety. Created by David Austin and named after the heroine from Far from the Madding Crowd, it carries something of her spirit: independent, elegant and impossible to overlook without ever asking for attention.
In the story, Bathsheba leaves a lasting impression not through extravagance but through presence — and this rose seems to follow the same path. Apricot-yellow buds slowly unfold into abundant rosettes filled with petals, revealing a soft harmony of apricot-pink, pale yellow and creamy outer petals that together create a warm apricot glow.
The flowers have something beautifully old-fashioned about them, almost peony-like in appearance, while their refined fragrance introduces another layer of character. Notes of myrrh softened with touches of honey and tea create a fragrance that feels elegant rather than overpowering — the kind of scent discovered rather than announced.
As a vigorous medium-sized climber, Bathsheba brings movement and softness to vertical spaces. Flowering repeatedly throughout the season, it dresses arches, pergolas and walls with a quiet sense of romance. This is one of those roses we imagine becoming part of the garden story itself — returning each year with the same calm confidence that made its namesake unforgettable.
