Full Description:

If your garden were a classical dress with a large-rose motif, created by a French designer for the Great Ball at the palace, what perfume would it wear? Château de Cheverny would be the natural choice: a rich, enveloping fragrance with fresh floral notes, summer fruit and warm vanilla-tea nuances, carried through the garden from spring into autumn.

Created by Georges Delbard and named after Château de Cheverny in the Loire Valley, this rose reflects the château’s balance of elegance, warmth and enduring character. Its upright growth gives structure to the garden, while its abundant flowers ensure the display never feels formal or severe.

Pink-flushed yellow buds open into full, cup-shaped flowers of luminous saffron yellow. The colour is rich without becoming harsh, allowing the blooms to combine naturally with blue, purple, white and soft green companion plants.

Fragrance is one of the variety’s defining qualities. Its intense perfume combines floral and fruity accords with warm vanilla and tea-like nuances, creating a scent that feels fresh at first and gradually becomes softer and more enveloping.

Château de Cheverny flowers continuously from May until October, producing repeated waves of bloom throughout the summer. It forms a vigorous shrub approximately 120–150 cm tall, clothed in bright, glossy foliage with excellent resistance to disease.

Its height makes it particularly effective towards the middle or back of a border, as a substantial specimen rose or planted in a group for a more expansive display. It may also be grown in a large container, provided there is sufficient depth for the roots and regular access to water and nutrients.

The flowers can be cut for bouquets and floral arrangements, where their warm colour and powerful fragrance bring the atmosphere of the garden indoors. Cut blooms generally remain attractive for approximately five days in a vase.

The variety received the ADR distinction in 2016, followed by the SNHF Grand Prix de la Rose in 2017. Further international recognition confirmed its unusual combination of fragrance, flowering performance and garden resilience.

Frequently asked questions →

Frequently asked questions:

What colour are the flowers of Château de Cheverny?
The buds begin in yellow with touches of pink before opening into luminous saffron-yellow flowers. The warm colouring remains easy to combine with both soft and contrasting garden palettes.

How strong is the fragrance?
Château de Cheverny is intensely fragrant. Its perfume combines fresh floral and fruity notes with warmer vanilla and tea-like nuances.

Where should I plant it to enjoy the fragrance?
Position it beside a terrace, entrance, seating area or frequently used path. Its height also allows the perfume to rise naturally around nearby planting.

Does Château de Cheverny flower repeatedly?
Yes. It flowers continuously in repeated waves from May until October, providing a long season of colour and fragrance.

How tall does Château de Cheverny grow?
It generally reaches approximately 120–150 cm, forming a substantial shrub with enough height for the middle or back of a border.

Is it suitable for a smaller garden?
Yes, provided enough space is available for its mature growth. In a compact garden, one plant can be used as a prominent specimen rather than planted as part of a large group.

Can it be grown in a container?
Yes. Use a large, deep container with excellent drainage and allow enough room for its vigorous root system. Regular watering and feeding are especially important for container-grown plants.

Is Château de Cheverny resistant to disease?
Yes. It is recognised for its excellent foliage health and received the demanding ADR distinction in 2016.

What does the ADR distinction mean?
ADR roses are evaluated over several years in different growing locations, with particular attention given to garden performance, flowering and resistance to leaf diseases.

Is this rose suitable for beginners?
Yes. Its strong growth, long flowering season and excellent disease resistance make it a reassuring choice for gardeners seeking reliable results.

Where does it work best in a border?
Its mature height makes it suitable for the middle or rear of a mixed border. It can also create a strong focal point when planted alone or in a group of three.

Which plants combine well with Château de Cheverny?
Blue salvia, lavender, nepeta and purple geraniums provide an attractive contrast to its yellow flowers. White perennials, ornamental grasses and dark green foliage create a calmer, more classical scheme.

Can the flowers be used in bouquets?
Yes. Their sunny colour and intense fragrance make them suitable for informal bouquets and richly scented floral arrangements.

How long do the cut flowers last?
Cut flowers generally remain attractive for approximately five days. Harvest them as the buds begin to open and place them promptly in clean water.

Why is this rose named Château de Cheverny?
It was named after Château de Cheverny, one of the celebrated historic estates of the Loire Valley. The rose’s luminous colouring and refined presence echo the warmth and elegance of its gardens.

What makes Château de Cheverny special?
Few yellow roses combine such a powerful fragrance with continuous flowering, substantial growth and award-winning disease resistance. It offers scent, colour and reliable garden performance in equal measure.

What does the rose look like on delivery?
Its appearance depends on the delivery season and natural stage of growth. For examples and explanations, see What roses look like on delivery →.
