Full Description:

Few roses earn the affection of gardeners across countries, climates and generations. Graham Thomas did exactly that, becoming one of David Austin’s most widely recognised creations and receiving the title of World’s Favourite Rose.

Named after the influential horticulturist and rose expert Graham Thomas, this variety captures the warmth and character associated with the finest English roses. Its large, double blooms open in an unusually clear, rich yellow that remains luminous against the smooth green foliage.

The flowers carry a light tea-rose fragrance and appear repeatedly throughout the season. Trained as a climber, the long stems can be guided over an arch, pergola, trellis, fence or sunny wall, where the yellow flowers can be appreciated at different heights.

Its sturdy growth and naturally attractive foliage give the plant presence even between flowering flushes. Position it where the stems have room to develop and where the warm colour can brighten an entrance, seating area or garden boundary.

Graham Thomas has also received the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, confirming its enduring appeal as both a beautiful and highly valued garden rose.

Frequently asked questions →

Frequently asked questions:

What makes Graham Thomas such a celebrated rose?
Its clear yellow colouring, classic English-style flowers, tea fragrance and lasting international popularity have made it one of David Austin’s best-known creations. It has also been recognised as the World’s Favourite Rose.

Is this the climbing form of Graham Thomas?
Yes. This variety is intended to be trained vertically on a suitable support, allowing its long stems and repeated flowers to cover an arch, wall, fence, pergola or trellis.

Does Climbing Graham Thomas flower repeatedly?
Yes. It produces successive flowering flushes throughout the season rather than blooming only once.

What colour are the flowers?
The flowers are a rich, clear yellow. Their warm colour is particularly effective against the smooth green foliage and can brighten areas dominated by brick, stone or dark timber.

How strong is the fragrance?
Graham Thomas has a light tea-rose fragrance. Plant it near a path, entrance or seating area where the flowers can be appreciated at close range.

Does it need a support?
Yes. Climbing roses do not attach themselves naturally, so the stems should be tied to a sturdy trellis, arch, pergola, fence or a system of horizontal wires.

How should I train the stems?
Guide the main stems horizontally or diagonally whenever possible. This encourages more flowering shoots to develop along the length of each cane.

Where should I plant it?
Choose a sunny position with good air circulation and enough room for the mature stems. A warm wall, substantial arch or pergola will provide the support needed for long-term growth.

Is it suitable for a smaller garden?
It can work well in a smaller garden when carefully trained on a defined vertical structure. Regular tying and pruning will help keep the growth within the available space.

Which plants combine well with Graham Thomas?
Blue clematis, lavender, nepeta and purple salvia provide an elegant contrast to the yellow flowers. White roses and silver foliage create a softer, more restrained combination.

Is it suitable for beginners?
Yes, provided it receives a strong support, suitable sunlight, regular watering during establishment and annual training. Its vigorous growth makes it a rewarding choice for gardeners new to climbing roses.

What does the rose look like on delivery?
Its appearance depends on the delivery season and natural stage of growth. For examples and explanations, see What roses look like on delivery →.

What should I do after planting?
Plant beside a sturdy support, water thoroughly and begin tying in the developing stems as they grow. For detailed guidance, visit our complete planting guide →.
