Bare-root roses are lifted only after they enter dormancy and the shoots have fully matured and hardened. Lifting them too early can stress the plants and leave young growth insufficiently mature.

We do not force the season simply to ship earlier. We wait for the right point in the plant’s natural cycle, so you receive a strong, well-matured rose ready for planting and the season ahead.

What about colder regions and winter frost?

Waiting until the shoots have fully matured helps the plants enter winter better prepared for low temperatures.

Famous Roses provides a 180-day establishment guarantee for bare-root roses.

Gabriel Oak® is a David Austin English shrub rose with large, many-petalled deep pink rosettes, strong fruity fragrance and repeat flowering. Vigorous and shapely, it forms a broad, rounded shrub about 125 cm high and wide, with mulberry-purple stems and dark green foliage.

Choose it if you want an intensely fragrant rose with rich flower form and a garden presence that feels generous, romantic and beautifully composed.

Full description:

Gabriel Oak® is one of those roses that immediately creates a feeling of richness in the garden. Its large, many-petalled rosette blooms open in a striking deep pink, while the outer petals pale slightly as each flower matures. The result is abundant and expressive without losing refinement.

The fragrance is one of its defining qualities: strong, fruity and easy to notice when planted near paths, terraces or places where time in the garden is meant to be enjoyed slowly. Combined with repeat flowering through the season, Gabriel Oak creates moments that feel both generous and personal.

This is one of those roses we would choose where fragrance truly matters. Gabriel Oak® is vigorous and forms a shapely, broad, rounded shrub. Mulberry-purple stems and dark green foliage add depth even between flowering cycles.

Introduced by David Austin in 2019 and named after the beloved character from Thomas Hardy’s novel Far from the Madding Crowd, Gabriel Oak® carries something of the same character: reliability, warmth and understated beauty.
