Bare-root roses are available to order now, with deliveries starting on 26 October. Close ↑

Bare-root roses are lifted only after they enter dormancy and the shoots have fully matured and hardened. Lifting them too early can stress the plants and leave young growth insufficiently mature.

We do not force the season simply to ship earlier. We wait for the right point in the plant’s natural cycle, so you receive a strong, well-matured rose ready for planting and the season ahead.

What about colder regions and winter frost?

Waiting until the shoots have fully matured helps the plants enter winter better prepared for low temperatures.

Famous Roses provides a 180-day establishment guarantee for bare-root roses.

Le Rouge et Le Noir® is a Georges Delbard Hybrid Tea Rose with almost-black buds that open into large, velvety deep-red flowers. Its intense fragrance combines fresh rose with warm vanilla, while repeat flowering from May until the first frost keeps the garden richly coloured for months.

Choose it if you want a dark, highly fragrant rose with unmistakable character and a dramatic transformation from near-black bud to deep crimson bloom.

Full description:

Le Rouge et Le Noir® begins with mystery. The tightly closed buds appear almost black, then slowly reveal velvety petals in an intense deep red.

Created by Georges Delbard in 1973, the rose takes its name from Stendhal’s famous novel Le Rouge et le Noir. The title could hardly be more fitting: the contrast between the dark buds and red open flowers is visible on the plant itself.

Its fragrance is one of its greatest strengths. Powerful and enveloping, it combines a fresh floral rose note with a soft, warm vanilla base, making the variety especially rewarding near paths, terraces and seating areas.

Le Rouge et Le Noir® is remontant and flowers generously from May until the first frost. It forms an upright bush approximately 80–100 cm high, with dark-green foliage that intensifies the dramatic colour of the flowers.

Its manageable size suits rose beds, borders and specimen planting, while Delbard also recommends it for bouquets. It performs best in a sunny position with rich, well-drained soil.

Hardy to approximately −20°C once established and showing good disease resistance, it combines dramatic colour with dependable garden performance.
