Bare-root roses are available to order now, with deliveries starting on 26 October. Close ↑
Bare-root roses are lifted only after they enter dormancy and the shoots have fully matured and hardened. Lifting them too early can stress the plants and leave young growth insufficiently mature.
We do not force the season simply to ship earlier. We wait for the right point in the plant’s natural cycle, so you receive a strong, well-matured rose ready for planting and the season ahead.
What about colder regions and winter frost?
Waiting until the shoots have fully matured helps the plants enter winter better prepared for low temperatures.
Famous Roses provides a 180-day establishment guarantee for bare-root roses.

Full description:
Chantal Mérieux has a beautiful contradiction at its heart. The shrub grows with a certain freedom, sending its branches in different directions with an almost carefree air. Then the flowers arrive—and suddenly everything becomes ordered and precise.
Created by Dominique Massad for the historic French house Guillot, Chantal Mérieux belongs to the Générosa® collection, developed to bring together the romance and fragrance associated with old roses and the repeat flowering expected from a modern garden variety.
The flowers are approximately 8 cm across and appear either individually or in small groups of up to three. Their petals open into beautifully defined quarters, with delicately notched edges that give the flowers something of the softness and generosity of peonies. Pink is the dominant colour, subtly shaded with carmine so that the blooms appear warm and luminous against the glossy green foliage.
Yet fragrance may be the real reason to grow Chantal Mérieux. Guillot describes a voluptuous perfume in which rose is joined by raspberry, myrrh, aniseed and even a suggestion of cider. It is an unusually complex combination: fruity, aromatic and unmistakably floral at the same time.
This is therefore a rose worth planting somewhere you actually spend time. Beside a terrace, along a path or close to a garden seat, its perfume becomes part of the experience of the garden rather than something appreciated only when a flower is deliberately picked.
Flowering is exceptionally generous, with successive blooms appearing from May until November. The plant develops into a vigorous shrub approximately 1.5 m high and 0.8 m wide, with bright, glossy foliage. Guillot also describes it as a particularly healthy rose, making its long flowering season easier to enjoy.
It works beautifully as an individual shrub or within a border, where its slightly informal growth can mingle naturally with perennials. It can also be grown in a generous container, provided it receives sufficient space, water and nutrition.
And when the fragrance deserves to come indoors, the flowers have good vase performance. A few stems are enough to explain what makes Chantal Mérieux memorable: a rose that looks romantic from across the garden, but reveals its greatest pleasure when you come close enough to breathe it in.

Frequently asked questions:
What colour is Chantal Mérieux?
The flowers are predominantly pink, subtly shaded with carmine. The variation within the petals gives the blooms more depth than a uniform pink rose.
What shape are the flowers?
The double flowers open into clearly defined quarters. Their delicately notched petals give them a soft, romantic appearance reminiscent of peonies and old garden roses.
How large are Chantal Mérieux's flowers?
Guillot gives an average diameter of approximately 8 cm. They appear either individually or in small groups of up to three flowers.
Is Chantal Mérieux strongly fragrant?
Yes. Guillot classifies Chantal Mérieux as very fragrant, and perfume is one of the variety's most important qualities.
What does Chantal Mérieux smell like?
Its complex perfume combines classic rose with fruity raspberry, aromatic myrrh and aniseed, together with an unusual cider-like nuance.
Where should I plant it to enjoy the fragrance?
Choose a sunny position near a path, terrace, entrance or seating area. This allows its strong perfume to become part of everyday time spent in the garden.
Does Chantal Mérieux repeat flower?
Yes. It is a very strong repeat-flowering rose, with successive blooms appearing from May until November under suitable conditions.
How large does Chantal Mérieux grow?
Guillot gives an average mature size of approximately 1.5 m high and 0.8 m wide, creating a substantial shrub without the dimensions of a large landscape rose.
What is its growth habit like?
Chantal Mérieux has a naturally relaxed, somewhat free-growing habit, with branches that can spread in different directions. This informal structure works particularly well in romantic and mixed borders.
Is Chantal Mérieux a healthy rose?
Yes. Guillot specifically describes Chantal Mérieux as a very healthy rose and suitable for an easier-care garden. Good sunlight, air circulation and appropriate watering will help it perform at its best.
Is Chantal Mérieux suitable for a mixed border?
Yes. Its informal shrub habit allows it to mingle naturally with perennials, while the glossy foliage and pink flowers provide structure and colour for much of the season.
Can Chantal Mérieux be grown in a container?
Yes. Guillot lists container growing among its uses. Because it can develop into a substantial shrub, choose a large, deep container with excellent drainage and provide regular watering and feeding.
Can Chantal Mérieux be planted as a specimen rose?
Yes. Its size, abundant flowering and exceptional fragrance give it enough presence to grow successfully as an individual focal shrub.
Is Chantal Mérieux suitable for cutting?
Yes. Guillot notes good vase performance, and cutting a few flowers is an excellent way to enjoy its complex fragrance indoors.
Which plants combine well with Chantal Mérieux?
Blue and violet perennials such as nepeta, salvia and hardy geraniums complement its pink-carmine colouring beautifully. White flowers and silver foliage create a softer, more romantic combination.
What does Générosa® mean?
Générosa® is Guillot's collection of modern roses created to combine qualities associated with old garden roses, such as romantic flower forms and rich fragrance, with characteristics valued in modern roses, particularly repeat flowering.
What makes Chantal Mérieux special?
Its combination of quartered pink-carmine flowers, very strong and unusually complex fragrance, long repeat-flowering season and naturally relaxed growth gives it a distinctive personality among modern shrub roses.
