Full Description:
Some roses decorate a garden. Florentina seems determined to give it a destination. Train it over an arch, beside the entrance to the house or across a pergola and, as the plant matures, that place naturally becomes somewhere you want to walk towards.
Created by Kordes in Germany, Florentina combines the drama of a red climbing rose with the romantic flower form of much older varieties. Its intensely coloured blooms reach approximately 8–9 cm and can contain around 70 petals, opening into generous rosettes that stand vividly against glossy dark-green foliage.
When the first major flush arrives, the effect can be spectacular: clusters of red flowers appear across the climbing framework, turning an ordinary wall, fence or arch into part of the garden itself. Further flushes follow throughout the season, renewing the display rather than allowing the colour to disappear after early summer.
But Florentina's beauty is only half of its appeal. This is a strong, sturdy climber selected for excellent resistance to common rose diseases and good winter hardiness. Its ADR recognition is particularly reassuring for gardeners who want romantic flowers without choosing a rose purely for appearance.
Florentina can also be grown in a large decorative container when given sufficient root space, regular care and a permanent climbing support. Wherever it is planted, its main stems can be trained horizontally or diagonally to encourage more flowering shoots and create a fuller display.
Give Florentina a structure to climb and, year after year, it can turn that structure into one of the defining features of your garden—a red flowering landmark that makes arriving home just a little more beautiful.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What colour are Florentina's flowers?
Florentina produces intensely red flowers that retain a rich, striking appearance against the plant's glossy dark-green foliage. It is an excellent choice when you want a true red focal point rather than softer pink or crimson tones.
What do Florentina's flowers look like?
The blooms are very double and romantically shaped, with up to approximately 70 petals. Their densely layered form gives Florentina much of the charm associated with old-fashioned roses while retaining the performance of a modern climber.
How large are the flowers?
Individual blooms are approximately 8–9 cm across. They appear generously across the plant, so the overall impact comes from both the richness of each flower and the abundance of the display.
Is Florentina fragrant?
Florentina has a light fragrance. Choose it primarily for its rich red colour, romantic flower form, repeat flowering and exceptional garden performance rather than for powerful perfume.
Does Florentina flower repeatedly?
Yes. Florentina produces an impressive initial flowering followed by further flushes throughout the growing season, allowing its red colour to return repeatedly rather than disappearing after early summer.
How tall does Florentina grow?
Expect approximately 2 metres or more once established. Final height depends on climate, soil, pruning and how the main stems are trained.
Does Florentina need a climbing support?
Yes. Provide a sturdy arch, pergola, trellis, fence or wall support and secure the principal stems as the rose develops.
How should I train Florentina for more flowers?
Rather than allowing every main cane to grow vertically, guide some stems horizontally or diagonally. This encourages flowering side shoots along a greater portion of the stems and helps create a fuller display.
Is Florentina resistant to disease?
Yes. Excellent disease resistance is one of Florentina's most important strengths. Its healthy foliage makes it particularly attractive to gardeners who want a beautiful climber with dependable long-term performance.
What does the ADR award mean?
ADR is one of Europe's respected rose trials. Varieties are evaluated over several years for qualities including flowering, garden value, winter hardiness and particularly natural resistance to leaf diseases. Florentina's ADR recognition provides additional confidence in its garden performance.
Is Florentina resistant to cold winters?
Florentina is known for very good winter hardiness. As with other grafted roses, protecting the grafting point with soil or mulch is sensible where winters are particularly severe.
Is Florentina suitable for beginners?
Yes. Its vigorous growth, excellent disease resistance, good winter hardiness and repeat flowering make it a reassuring climbing rose for gardeners who want strong performance as well as beautiful flowers.
Where is the best place to plant Florentina?
Use it where the rose can become part of the architecture of your garden: beside an entrance, over an arch, against a sunny wall, along a fence or across a pergola. These positions allow its red flowers to create maximum visual impact.
Can Florentina be grown in a large pot?
Yes. Florentina can grow in a substantial decorative container provided it has generous root space, excellent drainage, regular feeding and watering, and a permanent support strong enough for the mature plant.
Is Florentina suitable for a smaller garden?
Yes, particularly when vertical space is available. Training it against a wall, fence or narrow trellis allows you to enjoy a substantial flowering display without using as much ground area as a large shrub rose.
How far apart should Florentina roses be planted?
Allow approximately 1–1.5 metres between plants, depending on the effect you want and the structure they will cover. Adequate spacing also helps maintain good airflow.
Which plants combine well with Florentina?
White clematis, lavender, nepeta, blue salvia and silver foliage provide elegant contrast to its intense red flowers. Cream and soft pink roses can create a warmer, more romantic composition.
What makes Florentina special among red climbing roses?
Florentina brings together richly petalled romantic flowers, intense red colour, abundant repeat flowering, excellent disease resistance and strong winter hardiness. It is a particularly convincing choice when you want beauty and dependable performance from the same climber.
