Full description:
There is something especially charming about a rose that seems to belong to another era. Charming Piano has the soft pink colouring, abundant petals and rounded flowers of a romantic garden rose, yet grows with the neat proportions and practical qualities of a modern variety. It brings the beauty of an old-fashioned rose garden into spaces where every plant needs to earn its place.
Introduced by Rosen Tantau in 2012, Charming Piano belongs to the German breeder's celebrated Piano® family. These roses are admired for their nostalgic flower forms, in which tightly arranged petals gradually unfold to create wonderfully full, rounded blooms.
Charming Piano interprets this character in delicate pink. Its flowers open slowly, revealing layer after layer of softly arranged petals. Rather than becoming immediately flat and open, the blooms retain much of their compact, romantic form as they develop, allowing their beauty to be enjoyed over an extended period.
Each flower measures approximately 6–8 cm across. The densely petalled shape gives the blooms a generous appearance, while their soft colouring makes them easy to combine with other roses and flowering perennials. In a romantic border, they bring a gentle rhythm of pink among the greens, blues and silvers of neighbouring plants.
One of Charming Piano's most useful qualities is its exceptional resistance to rain. Rosen Tantau specifically highlights the flowers' ability to withstand wet weather, an advantage for gardeners who love densely filled roses but worry about how delicate-looking blooms will perform when conditions are less than perfect.
The shrub is compact, bushy and upright, typically reaching approximately 70–100 cm in height. Its balanced growth makes it particularly useful towards the front or middle of a border, where the flowers can be appreciated closely without the plant overwhelming its neighbours.
Flowering repeats throughout the growing season, bringing fresh waves of pink blooms after the first display. Plant several together for a more generous effect, or combine Charming Piano with lavender, nepeta, salvia and other perennials for a relaxed garden composition.
Its appeal continues beyond the garden. Rosen Tantau also values Charming Piano for professional cut-flower cultivation, where its romantic appearance makes it a natural choice for bouquets and floral arrangements. A few stems in a vase can bring the same old-fashioned charm indoors.
Charming Piano does not need dramatic colour or an imposing growth habit to make itself memorable. Its beauty lies in the details: soft pink petals, flowers that take their time to open, and a compact shrub that fits naturally into the garden around it. A little romance, beautifully composed, and ready to return with every new flowering.
