Full description:
Some roses are named after people admired for beauty. Alexandra David-Néel honours something different: curiosity, independence and the courage to go beyond the familiar.
Explorer, writer and pioneer, Alexandra David-Néel spent her life travelling towards places others considered unreachable. In 1924, she entered the forbidden city of Lhasa in Tibet, becoming the first European woman to do so. She was also passionate about roses, making Delbard's floral tribute feel particularly fitting.
The rose that carries her name has the same ability to reveal more the closer you look. Its approximately 9 cm flowers contain more than 60 delicately serrated petals in a deep mauve-pink to violine-pink shade. As the blooms mature and conditions change, subtle tonal variations can appear across the clusters, giving the plant a constantly evolving character.
Then comes its fragrance. Alexandra David-Néel belongs to Delbard's prestigious Grands Parfums collection, and the perfume is one of its defining qualities: intense floral rose enriched by lilac and fresh green notes reminiscent of ivy. It is a scent worth planting beside a path, terrace or seating area where you can encounter it repeatedly.
Flowering begins in May and returns exceptionally well until the first frosts. The blooms appear in generous clusters above dense, glossy dark-green foliage, creating a full display despite the plant's compact dimensions of approximately 60–80 cm.
Very good disease resistance and strong winter hardiness make this rose as dependable as it is distinctive. It received international recognition even before reaching the market, with Certificates of Merit at Le Roeulx and Nyon and an Honour Prize at Baden-Baden.
Alexandra David-Néel spent a lifetime following roads that led beyond the ordinary. Perhaps that is the best place for this rose too: not merely filling an empty space, but becoming the variety that makes you stop, lean closer and discover something new every time it flowers.
