Some roses are admired from a distance. Gospel invites you closer. Its deep crimson flowers are striking enough to stop you in your tracks, but it is the fragrance that makes the encounter unforgettable. Rich, warm and intensely spicy, the perfume seems to give the flower a second voice, one that is every bit as expressive as its colour.
Created by the renowned German rose house Rosen Tantau, Gospel belongs to the Nostalgic Hybrid Tea family, combining the elegance of a modern garden rose with the richly petalled, romantic appearance of older varieties. Its flowers are substantial, beautifully formed and full of character.
The blooms open in deep crimson-red shades, their petals gradually unfolding into generous cups. Measuring approximately 10–12 cm across, they have a sense of depth and richness that becomes particularly beautiful in the softer light of morning and evening.
Flowers are carried on medium-length stems, often accompanied by three to five side buds. This creates an abundant display as individual flowers open at different stages, with the deeper tones of the buds providing a beautiful contrast to the fully developed blooms.
Yet the defining quality of Gospel is undoubtedly its fragrance. Rosen Tantau describes it as extraordinarily intense, with a distinctive oriental, spicy character. Unlike roses whose scent can only be appreciated with your nose close to the petals, Gospel has a perfume that can make its presence known as you approach the plant.
Plant it near a terrace, along a frequently used path or beside a garden seat, and its fragrance becomes part of everyday life outdoors. Its richly coloured flowers also provide a beautiful contrast to pale stone, green foliage and neighbouring plants in soft blue, violet or cream.
The plant forms a well-branched, upright and bushy shrub, reaching approximately 70–100 cm in height. Its compact proportions make it suitable for rose beds, mixed borders, group planting and large containers, allowing gardeners to enjoy its impressive flowers without needing space for a large shrub.
Flowering repeats in successive flushes throughout the season. Each new wave brings another opportunity to enjoy the combination that makes Gospel so distinctive: deeply coloured, nostalgic flowers and a powerful perfume that seems almost disproportionate to the size of the plant.
The flowers are also excellent for cutting. A few stems arranged in a vase bring the richness of their crimson colouring indoors, together with the warm, spicy fragrance that gives this rose its personality.
Gospel's qualities have earned recognition at international rose competitions, including distinctions in Geneva, Tokyo, Nagaoka and Rome. Particularly notable are its fragrance awards, confirming that this is a rose whose perfume deserves as much attention as its appearance.
There is something wonderfully appropriate about its name. Gospel is a rose that makes a statement without needing to be extravagant in size. Its message is delivered through colour, fragrance and the repeated pleasure of new flowers: a reminder that the most memorable roses are not always those that occupy the most space, but those that leave the strongest impression.

The flowers have a romantic, nostalgic appearance. They open into generous cups with many petals, combining the fullness of old-fashioned roses with the elegance of a Hybrid Tea variety.
How large are Gospel's flowers?
The blooms measure approximately 10–12 cm across, making them particularly impressive for a shrub that generally remains under one metre tall.
Does Gospel produce several flowers on one stem?
Yes. The main flower is often accompanied by three to five side buds, creating a generous display as the buds develop and open.
Is Gospel strongly fragrant?
Yes. Exceptionally strong fragrance is Gospel's most distinctive characteristic. It is an excellent choice for gardeners who place perfume among their highest priorities when choosing a rose.
What does Gospel smell like?
Rosen Tantau describes its fragrance as intense, oriental and spicy. The perfume has a rich, warm character rather than a light, fresh or predominantly citrus scent.
Where should I plant Gospel to enjoy its fragrance?
Choose a sunny position near a path, terrace, entrance or seating area. Its powerful perfume makes it especially rewarding in places where you regularly spend time.
Does Gospel repeat flower?

How tall does Gospel grow?
It generally reaches approximately 70–100 cm in height, developing into a compact, upright and well-branched shrub.
Is Gospel suitable for a small garden?

Can Gospel be grown in a container?
Yes. Its compact habit makes it suitable for a large, deep container with good drainage. Regular watering and feeding are particularly important when growing roses in pots.
Can several Gospel roses be planted together?
Yes. Group planting creates a stronger display of crimson flowers and concentrates their fragrance in one area of the garden.
How far apart should Gospel roses be planted?
Rosen Tantau recommends approximately four to five plants per square metre, corresponding to around 45–50 cm between plants for group planting.
Is Gospel suitable for cutting?
Yes. Its large, deeply coloured flowers and exceptionally strong fragrance make it particularly attractive for bouquets and floral arrangements.
Which plants combine well with Gospel?

What makes Gospel different from other red roses?
Gospel combines large, deeply cupped crimson flowers with a particularly intense, warm and spicy fragrance. Its compact growth and repeat flowering make that combination accessible even in relatively small gardens.
